RB5009 not able to factory reset

Hey everyone,

I just got my RB5009, pretty psyched to set it up. I was playing around with some settings (from Fedora 34 were I was able to connect via 192.168.88.1 ip). As one does, I messed up the settings pretty bad and can no longer connect to the device.

I've tried resetting the device (pull the power, hold the reset button while I plug it in and then wait until I get a flashing light on the SFP cage) and trying to connect again via port 1 over TCP/IP but I am getting 'Destination Host Unreachable. Here's some additional config details:

$ip a
9: enp10s0u2u1u2: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc fq_codel state UP group default qlen 1000
link/ether 3c:e1:a1:d0:9f:7f brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

inet6 fe80::d877RB5009 not able to factory reset (2)d45:4c20/64 scope link noprefixroute

$ip route

192.168.88.0/24 dev enp10s0u2u1u2 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.88.2 metric 100

I had a similar situation happen recently. When I went to initially connect to this device, I wanted to simply see if it could get an IP address via DHCP via my ISP but could not get it to connect (despite getting one fine with my ASUS RT-N66U, which is of course completely disconnected and powered off while attempting to connect the RB5009). I then chose to reset the config through the webfig, which seemed to go well but still could not get an IP address.

Then I attempted to reset via SSH using the following commands at https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ ... figuration

Code: Select all

/system reset-configuration no-defaults=yes skip-backup=yes

This is where it seems to have gone wrong. I waited a couple of minutes to reconnect to 192.168.88.1 and could never get connected. I also followed the reset directions at https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/pages/vi ... andjumpers and still cannot connect.

If you have the option to use Winbox, this can connect using the MAC address rather than using an IP. You still need the right credentials but once you have them, you can do a full reset using the Winbox application.

If you fully reset a routerboard, and select no default config then it will have no IP address.

You will need to use winbox and click on the mac address when it appears in neighbours.

Also if you don't see it when connected to ether1, try a different port.

Thanks for your quick reply and suggestions!

I was able to connect via MAC address using Winbox. Prior to your messages, I understood that I can connect via MAC address but didn't have access to a PC or Wine to run the app at the time. I've successfully got this RB up and running and eliminated my CenturyLink router and AP.

I have got the same issue, but it doesn't popup under neighbors. I tried eth1, 2 and 8 but no luck. Do I need some specific IP settings in my PC or does it work with DHCP on the Ethernet card?

If you still have trouble check my last post in my thread: viewtopic.php?t=202754 for my newly acquired L009. In my setup, L009 port2 is connected to my ISP modem. If your device port2 is connected to a PC, the same should still work using winbox/MAC addr. Press the refresh button few times.

wow, so what do you do like now when I want to configure a few devices at a time with remote colleagues, normally we plug a few into the main modem, do quick port forward / quick access from IP addresses over SSH / GUI and we get on with it... after 3 list evenings due to time zone differences I have had to order and usbc to eth adapter and do one at a time manually?

Really worried if we can deploy these in the field if you cannot remote restore / remote SSH

Surely this cannot be the case? Am I missing something?

Try to understand that "no configuration" really means "no configured IP and any services" ... it also means "bare metal device with MAC-only access".
Some brands let you configure such "unconfigured" devices ONLY via real serial port and terminal.
Winbox+MAC L2 access is a real advantage ... but that also could be a pain in an ....
