The chains of the blades were permanently seared onto the forearms of the wielder, which served as a reminder of their oath to the God of War, and could only be removed either by the God of War himself or when the wielder's time of servitude ended.

Blades of Chaos: Powerful chained blades given to Kratos by Ares after he pledged his allegiance to him. They are a pair of large curved blades that are attached to Kratos' arms via chains, which serve as both weapons and marks of his servitude to the God of War.
